Designing With Old Refinished Furniture

Decorating a house on a tight budget is one tough task. Thanks to flea markets and discount furniture stores though, this problem could be solved much faster. But is it a great idea to rely on flea market finds in decorating a new house?

There are several things that you should keep in mind when rummaging through flea market offerings. First off, beware of painted stuff. Most of the time, that fresh coat of paint is there for a reason and that is to hide unsightly defects on the item.

Another thing that you should look at is when the furniture item was made. If it was manufactured in the 50s or 60s, you can be sure that it is solidly built. Those were the times when solid hardwood instead of particleboards was used widely. Also, cutting corners in manufacturing furniture back then was almost unheard of.

Always keep in mind the result after you have worked your magic with the furniture you bought at a flea market. Even if you can easily return its former glory, if that piece does not fit your living space, then buying it in the first place was not a wise decision.
